Sunday Read is a weekly feature on books we come across and like. In addition to of course the content, our focus lies primarily on the design, its haptic and layout. This is reflected upon through unique set ups, that is presented in a series of photographs. A small statement in the end provides you with all further necessary information.
Christmas holidays came to an end and after days of feasting it seems to be time for some potential new years resolutions: One could be to over think your eating habits, which does not necessarily include yet another perfect diet, but rather be more conscious of what you eat. Here fore, today’s Sunday Read could be a good starting point: „TYT [ Take your time] Vol. 5: The Kitchen“ is the latest volume of an ongoing in-house production by artists Olafur Eliasson and his studio, presenting current research and projects in the format of an intermittently recurring magazine with an emphasis on the process of developing and testing ideas and artworks.
„TYT [Take Your Time], Vol. 5: The Kitchen“, takes the form of an extended artist’s book / cookbook of 368 pages and focuses on the studio’s kitchen – its work, research, and experiments. Since the work and food thinking of the kitchen team are closely connected with the projects, symposia, workshops, openings, and events at the studio as well as the Institut für Raumexperimente and the studio’s project space Grey Sheep, the book is a portrait of the studio seen from the perspective of the kitchen.
Along with over 100 vegetarian recipes, the book provides insight into the daily life of the studio with the kitchen at its heart, and documents a wide range of workshops, food experiments, and selected exhibitions. A foreword by Olafur and an introduction by Asako Iwama and Lauren Maurer – who lead the kitchen team – sketch both the history of the kitchen as well as its key ideas. The portrait is complemented with contributions by friends of the studio who have visited and collaborated with the kitchen team, including chef and food activist Alice Waters; artist, poet, and gallerist Hu Fang; artist and writer Pireeni Sundaralingam; artist Nico Dockx, and students from the institute.
Divided into eight chapters with the headings Studio, Body, Plants, Seeds, Microorganisms, DNA, Minerals, and Universe, the book touches upon the context of food and eating in relation to our body, the world at large, and ultimately the earth and the universe. Flipping through the book, the reader will journey from the studio and its garden and kitchen, further into the body, and eventually out into space – discovering along the way how the act of eating is inseparable from the flow of time, or how by eating food, we are essentially eating the sun (sewn book / paperback with open binding).
